The pioneering indian musician Charanjit Singh sadly passed away at his home in Mumbai on Sunday, July 5.
In 1982, after decades spent working in Bollywood and releasing cover albums of popular Indian songs, Singh purchased a Roland Jupiter-8 keyboard, a Roland TR-808 drum machine and a Roland TB-303 and decided to make a record that blended traditional Indian ragas with western dance music patterns.
The result is an acid house album called “Synthesizing - 10 Ragas To A Disco Beat” that sounds weird for that time and was a largely forgotten commercial flop until it was reissued by Dutch label Bombay Connection in 2010.
The Obscure Music Club is devoted to his music and to his genius and that’s why we decided to celebrate Mr. Singh making an edited video of the track “Raga Kalavati”, that was the tune which ipnotized us some years ago!
So … have a nice indian techno trip!
