One of the most important band of hip hop history , personally my favourite without any doubt! A Tribe Called Quest were miles far away from the stereotype of the common hip hop artist (a kind of bully who likes guns, money and stupid cars in the 90’s and a metrosexual fashion addicted nowadays). A Tribe Called Quest (collective formed in 1985 in Queens, New York and originally composed of MC and main producer Q-Tip, MC Phife Dawg, DJ and co-producer Ali Shaheed Muhammad and MC Jarobi White, who left the group in 1991) were simply unique for their comprension of afro music, for their musical culture that let them mix jazz, soul, pop, calipso music and many other references to create their unmistakable sound. On this post I want to let you know the 1990 debut album of the band, an absolute masterpiece called “People's Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm” . This is an LP marked by a both sophisticated and playful lyrical approach: light-hearted content like safe sex, vegetarianism, and youthful experiences; and to a lesser extent, an idiosyncratic sense of humor which was free from much of the posturing of both hardcore hip-hop and the more left-wing aspects of conscious hip-hop.
I still cleary remember when I saw this album in a record store in London when I was a teenager; I was immediately attracted from the artwork of the cover and for the title wich I still consider wonderfull, so I instinctively decided to buy it, as sometimes happens with some books, it is not you who finds them but them who find you. So it happened and I started to follow the path of rhythm and this remains after many years one of the very few hip hop album I still listen to with great pleasure.
